COMMENTARY | At Tuesday's night GOP debate, there was no clear winner of the night as the Republicans squared off in an odd set-up that looked like the board meeting in a high-school faculty lounge room.
The bizarre setting seemed to incite strange rhetoric out of the candidates, particularly Michele Bachmann who claimed Herman Cain's "999" plan was dangerous because "if you turn "999" upside down it reads "666." Giving a cold smile she said, "The devil is in the details."
All of the candidates had something to say about Cain's plan, trying to find something concrete about it, but even Cain himself said the plan was flawed. He denied that the criticism of his "999" plan's arithmetic is incorrect because it is incorrect. Cain continued the repeat the "999" plan, possibly using a marketing strategy to repeat the catchphrase over and over. Instead of coming out as a powerful candidate, most people seem more confused, including the others at the table.
Mitt Romney continued to prove himself as a strong candidate. Before the debate one adviser to a rival campaign stated about Romney, "He's got a glass jaw but no one will hit it."
The only candidate who tried to swing at Romney's "glass jaw" but clearly missed was Cain who asked Romney: "Can you name all 59 points in your 160-page [jobs] plan, and does it satisfy that criteria of being simple, transparent, efficient, fair, and neutral?"
Romney was all smiles as usual. He replied, "Herman, I have had the experience in my life of taking on some tough problems. And I must admit that simple answers are always very helpful, but oftentimes inadequate."
The focus of the night shifted between Romney and Perry. Tuesday night was supposed to be the night Perry took the lead as the GOP candidate but Perry failed to ignite any political excitement. Romney quickly shot down any claims Perry had against him, particularly on health care.
"I'm still speaking," Romney barked back as Perry tried to interrupt his answer. "We -- we have -- we have less than 1 percent of our kids that are uninsured. You have a million kids uninsured in Texas. A million kids. Under President Bush, the percentage uninsured went down. Under your leadership, it's gone up. I care about people."
Perry failed to show his true colors and Romney remained cool and calm as usual. The Tuesday night GOP debate lacked any true political passion which is unfortunate for a group of Americans bidding to be the next president of the United States.
