Beyonce Gives Birth to Tiana-May Carter ... According to Twitter

Rumors about Beyonce giving birth are currently blowing up Twitter, but have yet to be confirmed by the singer, husband Jay-Z, or any reputable source for that matter.

So ... there you are.

The (very possibly made-up) consensus seems to be that Beyonce welcomed a girl into the world this week, and that the little bundle of joy is named Tiana-May Carter.

Twitter makes up cute names at least.

Pregnant Beyonce Pic

The rumors we've read online - again, these are just rumors from social media, not even celebrity gossip sources - say she was taken to St. Luke's Hospital in New York City, and overnight, word spread that she had delivered a daughter.

Multiple outlets have picked up the story, but all cited the growing buzz on Twitter as the source and nothing more. She's due in February, so it's probably baseless chatter at this point, but also not impossible for her to give birth early.

Twitter also made Jon Bon Jovi dead recently. At least this is a nicer rumor.

Either way, the final countdown, which began after Beyonce's pregnancy reveal at the MTV VMAs, to the birth of the most famous celebrity babies in years is either over, or close to being over. We'll keep you posted as we learn more!

AIG's UGC business to launch loan-document product (Reuters)

New York (Reuters) ? American International Group Inc's (AIG.N) mortgage-insurance subsidiary plans to launch a product next month that will independently review and store loan paperwork for a fee, the latest attempt to cut down on the battles between banks and insurers over bad mortgage loans.

Banks that agree to use United Guaranty Corp's "CoverEdge" will pay a 10 to 15 percent fee in exchange for a full review of mortgage documents, both before and after loan closing. The fee will likely be passed on to borrowers as part of closing costs.

United Guaranty will independently verify borrowers' credit scores, payment histories and income, as well as home appraisal values and other details that are viewed as predictors of loan performance. The insurer will also act as a repository for the paperwork, which can be accessed when claims arise.

"This would be a second set of eyes and ears on the loans to ensure everything is 100 percent correct," Eric Martinez, chief executive of United Guaranty, said in an interview.

"One of the biggest problems we have today in the mortgage community is, we don't know if a loan is good or bad until it goes to claim or goes delinquent," he said. "This is designed to stop the bad loans from entering the system in the first place."

Fannie Mae (FNMA.OB) has agreed to purchase loans that have been vetted by the CoverEdge program, while Freddie Mac (FMCC.OB) is reviewing the product, United Guaranty said. Their approval is key to widespread use of CoverEdge, since banks sell most of their loans to the mortgage-finance companies.

Real Estate Mortgage Network, a lender based in River Edge, New Jersey, has agreed to test the program in a pilot period through March before a national roll-out in the spring.

Banks and mortgage brokers already perform such reviews when underwriting loans, but their practices became sloppy during the mortgage-lending boom. The resulting paperwork errors, missing documents and, in some cases, alleged fraud, have created an industry-wide battle among banks, bondholders, insurers and government agencies over who should foot the bill.

U.S. banks including Bank of America Corp (BAC.N), JPMorgan Chase & Co (JPM.N), Wells Fargo & Co (WFC.N) and Citigroup Inc (C.N) have spent $35.5 billion since mid-2010 on repurchasing mortgage-backed securities (MBS) from investors who said loans breached representations and warranties in contracts, according to Inside Mortgage Finance.

United Guaranty became the biggest underwriter of new mortgage insurance last quarter. It now has a 25 percent share of the market, according to Guy Cecala, CEO and publisher of Inside Mortgage Finance.

While its performance has improved, the business still reported a $66 million pre-tax loss for the first nine months of 2011, with $3 billion in reserves for future claims.

Rescissions and denials of claim have been "a huge issue" for lenders, Cecala said, which could make CoverEdge attractive to banks. But the key challenge will be keeping prices down for borrowers, especially if United Guaranty's competitors do not adopt similar documentation services.

"I think there will be demand for it in the market," said Cecala. "But is it a game changer that will lift United Guaranty way over its competitors? No."

iPhone 5, Samsung Galaxy S3 and more: The 10 gadgets we can?t wait to see next year

It?s hard to believe, but 2011 has almost wrapped. Of course, the latest, hottest gadgets don?t stop for recantations of Auld Lang Syne or annual Hootenannies, and 2012 will be packed with even more incredible kit. From the Samsung Galaxy S3 to a Kinect sequel, here?s what on our radar for 2012.

Apple TV
Steve Jobs left biographer Walter Isaacson several tantalising clues that a flatscreen Apple TV really could be happening, and the latest reports suggest Sharp is set to manufacture the screens for a summer release. We?ve already outlined how we think Siri could be used to control an Apple iTV, but as yet no-one?s peeped a glimpsed of what it?ll look like. The money?s on a gorgeous aluminium frame and not many buttons.

Samsung Galaxy S3
With Samsung hard at work on a quad-core chipset for mobile phones already, we?d have to figure the Samsung Galaxy S3 Android phone will be appearing soon ? perhaps at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona in February. While details are scant right now, it seems highly probably it?ll run Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0, overlaid with TouchWiz, and use a 720p AMOLED display, as the Samsung Galaxy Nexus already does. If so, it?s almost certainly going to be the only smartphone worth your time until the iPhone 5 rocks up. Speaking of which?

iPhone 5
Apple?s nomenclature is significant. The iPhone 4S isn?t the iPhone 5 because it?s still by and large the same design ? its only real differentiator is Siri. But make no mistake, Apple is already hard at work on a successor: whether this one ends up being the iPhone 5 or iPhone 6, we?re expecting an even sharper display, and maybe even some tight Apple TV integration.

The first Sony Android phone
Earlier this year, Sony finally got its act together and bought out telecoms partner Ericsson: Sony Ericsson is no more. The Japanese gadget giant has already said we?ll see the first Sony branded phones again next year, and it seems highly likely that they?ll pick up where SE left off, and run Android. Whether they?ll offer a better PlayStation experience than the lacklustre Xperia Play remains to be seen, but here?s hoping.

Kinect 2
Microsoft has wisely realised that Kinect, its motion sensing console add-on, is bigger than Xbox. It?s promised new Kinect hardware for PCs next year, and as you can see from its videos, it?s promising much more accuracy. You?ll even be able to play a virtual instrument, the trailers suggest. We hope so, and we?d love to see how a Kinect 2 could be used to give Windows 8 a real Minority Report vibe.

BlackBerry London
We know for sure that dual-core, 4G BlackBerry phones are on the way next year. Supposedly, what you see here will be the first of them: the BlackBerry London, a Porsche Design-inspired followed up of sorts to the popular Torch series of emailers. It sure looks tasty, but there is a question of timing: RIM says we won?t be seeing its new BlackBerry Ten models until the end of 2012. Humbug.

The Facebook Phone
Yes, yes, we?ve seen phones touted as that before, from the INQ1 to the HTC ChaCha and its rather superfluous physical F button. This time though, it really will be a Facebook Phone. The Wall Street Journal says that it?s coming next year, and will run a heavily modified version of open source Android ? and it?s being built by HTC. Could this be how HTC competes against Samsung?s mighty Galaxy line this year?

Xbox 720
We?ll be honest, we?d be surprised if the Xbox 720 goes on sale in 2012. Both Microsoft and Sony have been telegraphing that they?d quite like a detente for a little while longer in the console arms race. But consoles have long lead times to build anticipation and get games ready to go: it?s not out of the question that we?ll see an Xbox 720 at CES, as rumours have suggested. Hell, if Microsoft is happy to have the brand appearing in films set in the future, that?s as good a sign as any it?s coming.

iPad 3
Come on. We all know the iPad 3 is a shoe-in for next year. The only question is how thin will it be, and how sharp can the screen go? Don?t rule out an iPad 3 of a different size and form factor either, mind ? there?ve been too many reports and rumours of a smaller, more portable seven-inch iPad to ignore.

Amazon Kindle Fire 2
Word out out the Far East is that a follow up to Amazon?s successful but US-only Kindle Fire tablet is due around April ? and as we?ve suggested before, that could give Amazon enough time to sort out its contents rights agreements to launch in Europe. A Kindle Fire 2 with Lovefilm built-in? Don?t rule it out.

FDA Backtracks On Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria Proposal

Oh great, another propaganda point that somehow supersedes a 3 centuries of research (keeping soldiers alive on the high seas was an intense focus of research with lots of fuckups... and you know what they already knew 3 centuries ago ? No matter what the fuckup, raw meat can fix it. Cooked/baked meat and fish (raw or cooked) can fix the large majority of fuckups with a few notable exceptions).

People (mostly small children though) die from not eating meat
If you die from too much meat, it'll be at 50 at the earliest.

And yes with a massively varied diet of plants you can avoid the need to eat meat almost completely. Not quite completely, but almost. To the point that your body can survive for maybe 2 decades without meat. This requires constant nutritional supplements (usually made from fish, so there's barely any nutricional supplements that qualify as vegetarian) and medical monitoring. It is a very difficult exercise, that's basically impossible in all but the most developed countries. You can cheat and drink milk and eat eggs, which will help a lot.

Your dietary suggestion of beans + grain is moronic. How about you eat beans and grains exclusively for 4 months, and we bet for 1000 dollars that it won't work. Of course, that's a bad bet, since either you cheat, or you die... In both cases I doubt I'll see any money. You will after all have died from the most basic of food diseases, scurvy, after 2-3 months. That would be 2-3 weeks at best if you didn't start out living in one of the most developed nations on earth.

In practice 2 weeks will cause enough symptoms to manifest themselves that the pain alone will drive you back to normalcy : after about a week on your proposed diet you will get small wounds which won't heal, usually in places like the corners of the mouth or between the fingers and toes. They won't heal. A little after that they will start to rip open merely because you move your body. A crust will form on them, time and again, but it will be unable to remain attached to your skin. These wounds will slowly grow in size. From that point on you will feel extremely bad and spend upwards of 14 hours in bed each day, you will lose interest in anything and everyting, complaining of a constant headache. And we're not even at ONE month yet. After a month you will lose the ability to breathe normally and have a constant sharp pain in your bones. Keep it up, and a few teeth will fall out, you will constantly have blood in your mouth, the result of large infected areas in your mouth, rendering you unable to eat or drink without extreme discomfort. Likewise, blood will leak from the other small wounds, which at this point won't be all that small anymore. After this, random internal bleeding will start occuring, making you look like a person who's gone 10 rounds against Mike Tyson, unsuccessfully. From this point on, if you're unlucky, it takes a few weeks for you to die. You will die from total loss of internal body cohesion : blood will literally leak everywhere, and at the autopsy if they break your skin without taking the pressure of first, it will gusher out.

Any other dietary suggestions ? Hint : best include the most basic of additives, vitamin C. It would also be great if you actually noticed that plants do not contain all 9 of the essential amino acids, and so you will have to include at least two non-plant lifeforms. And please note that children have 13 essential amino acids, so their dietary requirements (in the sense that they die if they don't get it) are more extensive. There are tons of special cases where additional nutrients are required either because of genetic predisposition or simple external factors ranging from contact with salt water to lack of sunlight.

There is one substance that contains all required nutrients for a human being : meat (raw meat). With fish being a close second (likewise raw), with only a few omissions. Pulverizing the bones and adding them to the meat itself makes both meat and fish much healthier (a feature ironically only part of "low-quality" meats).

Are they absolutely required ? No. But if you don't take them... you get to puzzle everything together. Miss one piece and you will not like the result at all.

Radiation for Breast Cancer Tied Up With Increase Heart Risk

With the steady number of individuals who are developing cancer, many researchers are continuing to conduct further studies in order to identify certain risk factors which may be contributory to the initiation of the cancer. Although there are already many risk factors that has been identified which include lifestyle factors, environmental factors and hereditary, still the major cause of the disease is left unknown and is left hanging. Hence, this serves as a challenge to the experts to make ways on how to protect the general population with this disease. On of the most common cancer among the women is breast cancer. Certain treatment modalities which help to prevent the spread of cancer have been established such as the radiation therapy. However, certain studies have been established to associate these treatment modalities to some health risks.

In fact, according to a new Swedish study, which was published in the online edition of the Journal of Clinical Oncology, those women who had breast cancer in their left breast and underwent radiation therapy had increase in the health risks which involve the heart.

The new study involved the analysis and examination of data gathered from about 8,190 women who were diagnosed of having breast cancer back in the year 1970 to 2003. Researchers discovered that out of these study participants, about 199 of them actually underwent into coronary angiography. This means that these women who underwent the said medical procedure had problems that indicate coronary heart disease (CAD).

Moreover, the researchers included in their analysis the comparison of the severity of blockage of those women who underwent radiation therapy in their left breast versus those women with breast cancer in their right breast. Researchers found out that the severity of the blockage of vessels were significantly increased among those women who had breast cancer in their left breast and were treated with radiation therapy. Specifically, grade 3 to grad 5 stenosis which means moderate blockage to full blockage of the vessels among those women who had radiation therapy in the right breast was 4.38 times higher as compared to other women.

As according to study authors led by Dr. Greger Nilsson, of the department of oncology, radiology and clinical immunology at Uppsala University Hospital, they wrote: ?we suggest that the coronary arteries be regarded as organs at risk in radiation therapy, and that every effort be made to avoid radiation dose to the coronary arteries.?

GM recalls 4,873 Sonic cars in US, Canada

General Motors Co is recalling 4,873 of its current year Chevrolet Sonic subcompact cars in the United States and Canada for possible missing front brake pads, the company and federal safety regulators said on Friday.

GM said it knows of no crashes or injuries due to the issue. GM said it is recalling the cars to see if inner or outer front brake pads are missing.

GM said that its research shows that between 20 and 30 of the recalled cars were sold without one of its brake pads. Of the total recalled, 4,296 were sold to U.S. customers and 577 to Canadian customers, GM said.

The issue was discovered during warranty service on a rental Sonic, GM said.

Customers will be informed of the recall by mid-January, GM said. If technicians at GM dealerships find that a brake pad is missing in a Sonic, they will, if needed, install new inner and outer pads. If needed, brake calipers and brake rotors will also be replaced, at no cost to customers.

GM just started selling the Sonic several months ago. Through November, it sold about 10,000 Sonics in the U.S. market, and nearly half that total in November.

The Sonic is made at GM's plant in Orion Township, Michigan. GM and the United Auto Workers union agreed to allow up to 40 percent of the production workers at the plant to be paid less than veteran UAW workers. The agreement was necessary to keep the Sonic from being produced outside the United States, the UAW and GM have said.

The attack took place in the city of Sapele, as about 50 children were gathered for an Arabic class.

Delta State police spokesman Charles Muka said that the attackers drove by a school and threw homemade explosives into a classroom Tuesday morning.

The wounded children were all aged younger than nine, Reuters reported. At least one was aged four.

Investigators suspect a local vigilante group was behind the incident, Muka added.

The latest incident follows coordinated attacks by radical Islamist militants on Christmas Day, which killed at least 39 people.

The radical Muslim sect known as Boko Haram? has claimed responsbility for the church attacks. Boko Haram aims to impose Islamic Shariah law across Nigeria.

Many northern Nigerian Christians fear the Christmas Day bombings could lead to a religious war in Africa's most populous country.

Meanwhile, a family of four was killed in a machete attack on Wednesday in Nigeria's ethnically and religiously mixed Plateau state ? on the threshold of the country's largely Muslim north and its mostly Christian south.

There was no immediate suggestion the killings had any link to Sunday's church bombings.

In a family's grief, determination to force university to tell parents of suicidal students

The email that arrived at Virginia Tech's health center in November 2007 was detailed and unmistakably ominous. It concerned a Tech senior named Daniel Kim and came from an acquaintance at another college.

"Daniel has been acting very suicidal recently, purchasing a $200 pistol, and claiming he'll go through with it," the email read, adding details of a reported previous suicide attempt with pills. "This is not a joke."

By the time Virginia Tech told Daniel's father, William Kim, about that email, it was too late.

A few weeks after it was sent to the school, he spoke with his son for the last time, Daniel indicating all was well and after final exams he'd be home for the holidays.

A few days after that, parked in his car outside a Target store near campus, Daniel fatally shot himself in the head.

"If I'd known, I could have taken him to doctors, get him on medication, make him normal again," William Kim, who owns a Washington, D.C., convenience store, said in a recent telephone interview, grief still echoing in his voice four years after the fact.

Virginia Tech's actions were all the more confounding coming just months after the murder-suicide rampage on the same campus by another student, Seung Hui Cho, which had supposedly prompted campuses nationwide to rethink their previous emphasis on confidentiality in treating troubled students.

"Who is going to take better care of him than his parents?" Kim said. "I never had the chance to do anything for him. That's a terrible feeling."

In an agreement finalized by a judge last month in a multimillion-dollar lawsuit brought by the family, the Kims settled with Virginia Tech for $250,000, plus an endowed scholarship in Daniel's name. But William Kim also insisted that the agreement include language requiring Virginia Tech to notify parents of a potentially suicidal student unless it documents a reason not to do so.

The university, which admits no fault, maintains the language reflects policies already in place there under a 2008 state law, and wouldn't have made a difference for Daniel Kim anyway. It continues to insist that, after sending local police to check on the student, and despite the detailed email, it had no reason to believe he was actively suicidal and thus didn't need to notify his family.

But the family's attorney, Gary Mims, insists the settlement goes further than the state law, which applies only to students treated by university mental health services. Now, he says, Virginia Tech must at least consider notifying parents if it receives an indication from any source a student may be suicidal. Several experts described it as among the strongest such policies in the country.

The issue of when colleges should notify parents their adult children may be suicidal remains fraught with legal, medical and ethical dilemmas. College policies, state laws and professional codes of conduct vary widely ? and occasionally conflict.

Some mental health professionals call the Virginia Tech settlement the latest step in a trend they welcome: Threats to safety increasingly take precedence over preserving confidentiality. They emphasize that in many cases, involving parents is not only right, but helpful.

"There's some good evidence if someone is really sick, that involving family in their treatment planning, the medication, helping them stay on track, are really good things to do," said Greg Eells, director of counseling and psychological services at Cornell University in New York, which has changed several policies to make notifying parents more common. "I think the (Virginia Tech settlement) is kind of affirming that."

But many remain wary of top-down pressure on counselors to notify parents as the default option, even if such policies are well-intentioned and allow exceptions. Many students have just passing thoughts of suicide. Also, relationships with parents may be part of the problem. Involving them too readily might discourage some people from getting help, or complicate treatment once they do.

"The less flexibility we have, it actually compromises care," said Mary-Jeanne Raleigh, director of counseling services at St. Mary's College in Maryland and president of ACCA, the American College Counseling Association. Overly rigid policies mean, she said, "I can't review what is best for the individual standing in front of me because the law is saying you have to x, y and z."

Suicide is the second leading cause of death for college students, behind automobile accidents. A 2010 survey of counseling center directors found at least 133 college students had taken their lives in the previous year. The better indicator is probably the rate, estimated at about 6 to 7.5 per 100,000 ? though that's only about half the suicide rate for similarly aged people not in college.

But while the research highlights the danger, it also sheds light on why these are tough calls for colleges. Warning signs aren't always as black and white as they were at Virginia Tech. A milder form of suicidal ideation ? fleeting hopelessness or thoughts about death _is common among college-age students.

A 2009 survey of 26,000 students at 70 colleges found that roughly half reported having had at least occasional suicidal thoughts. But more than half of those said such thoughts lasted a day or less. Roughly 6 percent of undergraduates reported they had "seriously considered attempting suicide" in the last 12 months. Colleges must determine who's most at risk ? typically those who have made detailed plans and acquired means such as a weapon or pills.

"Someone who's seeking help but says, `I have to admit I have these thoughts five or six times a day and they're kind of scary' ? that's someone I wouldn't necessarily feel compelled to call the parents right away," Raleigh said. "That's very different from the person I get a call from at 3 o'clock on a Saturday morning who's been drinking and has immediate plans to kill themselves."

The 2010 survey of counseling directors found that when a client was considered a "suicidal risk" but didn't meet the state-law criteria for involuntary hospitalization, 41 percent wouldn't notify anyone else without a signed release from the student. Only 13 percent said they would notify family; 22 percent said they would notify a superior, and 19 percent said it would depend on the situation.

Why the hesitation to involve family? The data also show why colleges worry so much about any action that might discourage troubled students from seeking help: 80 percent of students who commit suicide, like Kim, never participated in campus counseling services.

"I'm in favor of notifying parents," said Carolyn Wolf, a mental health lawyer who advises college officials. "These are kids who are 18, 19, 20 years old, they're legally adults, but I don't think they're developmentally adults at that point. Parents are much more involved in kids' lives these days for a longer period of time." Still, she said, "you need to give some amount of flexibility to those people who are in the trenches."

Wolf advises parents to remember that FERPA, the federal education privacy law, has clear exceptions for risks to health and safety, as do state laws. HIPPA, the federal medical privacy law, generally doesn't apply to colleges. And while counselors and psychiatrists may be unable to discuss a student they are treating, those rules don't apply to anyone else on campus; faculty and administrators can call home about behavioral issues.

And, Wolf points out, nothing forbids counselors from listening.

Parents "can call a counseling center and say, `I think this meets one of the (confidentiality) exceptions, but even if you can't tell me things, you need to listen to me give you history, give you information,'" Wolf said.

William Kim's lawsuit against Virginia Tech contends the school broke its own protocol, which called for any student who had made even a gesture about suicide to see a psychologist on call immediately. Instead, officials discussed the email the morning they received it, and dispatched a local police officer to Kim's off-campus residence.

The officer reported Kim "appeared to be OK" and that Kim said he didn't know the student who had sent the email. That student appeared to know Kim through online gaming. The university also checked to see if Kim had purchased a gun. Apparently he had not, but did so a few weeks later.

Confidentiality laws would not have prevented Virginia Tech from contacting Kim's parents because he was not a patient of the university counseling center. But university officials decided not to reach out. Having received no other unsolicited indications from family, acquaintances or teachers that Kim might be suicidal, they concluded he was not a danger.

Ed Spencer, Virginia Tech's vice president for student affairs, acknowledged that the university has wide latitude to contact family if a student is suicidal, and said it would do so if it made that determination.

But, he said in a telephone interview, Daniel Kim "was never found to be suicidal by anyone here at Virginia Tech or by the Blacksburg police."

Regardless of the detailed plans reported in the email, altogether "there was nothing that added up that he was at all suicidal," Spencer said. He added experts the university consulted backed up that view and "were surprised we went the extra mile" of checking on the gun.

But Mark Mills, a Columbia University psychiatrist retained by Kim's attorneys, found the email alone represented clear evidence of a "psychiatric emergency" and that it was "irresponsible and reckless" that Virginia Tech failed to take further action to see if Daniel needed help.

When William Kim asked university officials why they hadn't told him about the email, he says they told him it was "unnecessary."

Kim responded: "It was unnecessary? My son's life was in danger, and you didn't think it was necessary?"

"They didn't call his teachers, other students, they didn't call me," said Kim, who emphasized he was not angry at Virginia Tech as a whole. "Nothing was done whatsoever to save him."

Daniel Kim was a happy kid, said his father, who only later learned his son had agonized about his perceived resemblance to Cho and experienced anti-Korean slurs after the shootings on campus the April before he took his own life.

Only later did William Kim learn his son had secluded himself for two weeks in his dorm ? the same building where Cho killed his first two victims.

"When somebody's life is in danger, all the privacy, that should go out the window," he said. "No matter how bad your relationship with your parents, when something like that happens you want to know."

He added: "He was suffering at that school. We had no idea.""

NEW YORK (AP) ? Stocks ended barely changed in light trading Tuesday amid mixed economic news. Consumer confidence surged to an eight-month high, but home prices dropped in major cities. Sears plummeted after reporting that it would close more than 100 stores around the country.

The Dow Jones industrial average closed down just 2 points after staying in a narrow range all day. The S&P 500 index and Nasdaq eked out small gains.

In the latest sign of a bumpy recovery in the housing market, home prices fell in 19 of the 20 cities tracked by the Standard & Poor's/Case-Shiller index. Atlanta, Detroit and Minneapolis posted the biggest declines. Prices in Atlanta and Las Vegas fell to their lowest points since the housing crisis began.

That report dampened investors' enthusiasm about a jump in consumer confidence to the highest level since April. The New York-based Conference Board reported that its Consumer Confidence Index rose almost 10 points to 64.5 in December. Economists watch the numbers closely because consumer spending accounts for about 70 percent of U.S. economic activity.

Henry Herrmann, chief executive officer at the investment management firm Waddell & Reed, said the increase reflected the fact that more jobs have been created in recent weeks, which will likely lead to "a more sustained" economic recovery.

"If job creation will come with wage improvement in the coming weeks, it will boost confidence further," Herrmann said.

The Dow Jones lost 2.65 points, or 0.02 percent, to close at 12,291.35. The S&P 500 was up 0.10 points, or 0.01 percent, to 1,265.43. The Nasdaq composite rose 6.56, or 0.3 percent, to 2,625.20.

The most the Dow rose during the day was 34 points, and the most it fell was 24. It was the narrowest trading range in 5 months. Stocks are expected to trade within a narrow range all this week as trading remains light between the Christmas holiday and New Year's. The volume of shares traded on the New York Stock Exchange Tuesday was 2 billion, less than half the average daily volume this month.

Sears Holding Corp. plunged 27 percent to $33.38, the most in the S&P 500. The retailer warned it would close between 100 and 120 Sears and Kmart stores following poor sales during the holidays, the most crucial time of year for retailers.

The Sears news also dragged Whirlpool Corp. down 9 percent to $46.62. Investors worried the store closings would hurt sales of Whirlpool and Maytag washers and dryers the company makes.

A run of strong economic data in the U.S. has boosted the stock market in recent days. However analysts expect any gains to be tempered by worries over the European debt crisis.

Italy's borrowing costs rose Tuesday, reflecting a continued high level of investor anxiety. The yield on the country's ten-year bonds hit 7 percent again, which is considered unsustainable in the long run. Greece, Ireland and Portugal had to seek relief from their lenders after their own borrowing costs rose that high.

Italy is the euro zone's third-largest economy and is considered too big to get bailed out by its neighbors. Mario Monti, the country's new premier, got parliamentary approval last week for a big austerity package that is intended to save the country from financial disaster.

Markets have grown increasingly fearful over the past few months that Italy will find it difficult to pay off its massive debts, which stand at around $2.5 trillion.

In other corporate news:

? Computer Sciences Corp. fell 9 percent after warning that it will write down the value of an investment by about $1.5 billion.

? U.S. oil and gas explorer Endeavour International Corp. rose 24 percent after the company announced an agreement to buy ConocoPhillips' interest in three U.K. oil fields in the Central North Sea for $330 million.

? International Game Technology shares gained 5 percent following news that some states might be closer to permitting online gambling.

PFT: Move over, NFC West -- AFC South is worst

Tony Romo, Jerry JonesAP

During Saturday?s loss to the Eagles, Cowboys owner Jerry Jone went down to the sideline to talk to head coach Jason Garrett, to make sure Garrett knew the Giants had won earlier in the day and therefore the Cowboys didn?t have anything to play for.

Some fans and media members have suggested that Jones was out of line by doing that, but Jones says he can?t understand why anyone would think the owner of a business shouldn?t be involved in every element of that business.

?It has amazed me to be criticized for really walking down on the floor of the company,? Jones said on KTCK-AM 1310, via the Dallas Morning News. ?The more involved your top management, the more involved ownership can be, I?ve always thought made the best way for it to work.?

Jones says he doesn?t act any differently on game days now than he did in the 1990s, and that it worked out pretty well then.

?You didn?t see that kind of criticism very early on, but we were winning Super Bowls,? Jones said. ?And it was the same exact way that we handled our decision-making and the exact same way that we handled our ultimate information gathering system. We?ve been doing it ever since I owned the team. The exact same way.?

Jones says he doesn?t tell Garrett who can play and who can?t, but he did want to make sure Garrett understood that quarterback Tony Romo didn?t need to take any chances by playing in an essentially meaningless game against the Eagles.

?That?s Jason?s decision, but he doesn?t need to be making that one by himself,? Jones said. ?So I wanted to, very briefly, step down there with just a few minutes gone in the first quarter, sit there and say, ?Here?s the lay of the land. Romo?s got a hand injury, but it looks like we?re going to have him for New York.??

And if Jones thinks his coach might not know the lay of the land, Jones is going to make sure his coach knows the lay of the land. That?s going to be the case as long as Jones owns the Cowboys.

US weighing travel request for Yemen's president

(AP) ? The Obama administration is considering whether to allow Yemen's outgoing president into the United States for medical treatment, as fresh violence and political tensions flare in the strategically important Middle East nation.

A senior administration official said President Ali Abdullah Saleh's office requested that he be allowed to receive specialized treatment in the U.S. for injuries sustained in a June attack on his compound. The request was being considered, and would only be approved for medical reasons, the official said.

Until now, the White House had not commented on Saleh's assertion Saturday that he would be leaving Yemen and traveling to the U.S. Saleh insisted he was going in order to help calm tensions in his country, not for medical treatment.

The official, who requested anonymity because of a lack of authorization to speak publicly, did not say when the Obama administration would decide on Saleh's request. But the official said Saleh's office indicated that he would leave Yemen soon and spend time elsewhere abroad before he hoped to come to the U.S.

Demonstrators began protesting against Saleh and calling for his ouster in February. The Yemeni government responded with a bloody crackdown, leaving hundreds of protesters dead, and stoking fears of instability in a nation already grappling with burgeoning extremism.

Last month, Saleh agreed to a U.S.- and Saudi-backed deal to hand power over to his vice president and commit to stepping down completely in exchange for immunity. The deal further angered Saleh's opponents, who demanded he be tried for his attacks on protesters.

American officials are deeply concerned that the months of turmoil in Yemen have led to a security breakdown. The dangerous al-Qaida branch in Yemen, known as al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula, has taken advantage of the vacuum to expend its presence in southern Yemen.

Pressure has been mounting in recent weeks for Saleh to leave Yemen altogether. Opponents say he has continued to wield influence through his loyalists and relatives still in positions of power, hampering the transition ahead of presidential elections set for Feb. 21. Many feared he would find a way to continue his rule.

Activists said troops commanded by Saleh's relatives attacked protesters in the capital of Sanaa Saturday, killing at least nine people. Tens of thousands of people demonstrated the following day, protesting the deaths and demanding the resignation of Vice President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi for failing to bring the killers to justice.

The White House said President Barack Obama's top counterterrorism adviser, John Brennan, called Hadi on Sunday and emphasized the need for Yemeni security forces to show "maximum restraint" when dealing with demonstrations. Hadi told Brennan that he had launched an investigation into the recent deaths and injuries and would do his utmost to prevent further bloodshed, the White House said.

The White House said Brennan and Hadi agreed on the importance of continuing with the agreed-upon path of political transition in Yemen in order to ensure that the February elections take place.

Obama was being briefed on developments in Yemen while in Hawaii for his Christmas vacation.

The U.S. has experience with letting unpopular foreign leaders into this country for medical treatment.

More than three decades ago, President Jimmy Carter allowed the exiled shah of Iran into the U.S. for medical treatment in October 1979, eight months after Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini led a revolution that ousted the shah and created the Islamic Republic of Iran.

On Nov. 4, 1979, Iranian students occupied the U.S. embassy in Iran. Fifty-two American hostages were held for 444 days in response to Carter's refusal to send the shah back to Iran for trial.

Foot-long shrimp invade Gulf of Mexico

A truly jumbo shrimp is causing big worries about the future of the Gulf of Mexico's ecosystem.

The Asian tiger prawn, a foot-long crustacean with a voracious appetite and a proclivity for disease, has invaded the northern Gulf, threatening prized native species, from crabs and oysters to smaller brown and white shrimp.

Though no one is sure what the ecological impact will be, scientists fear a tiger prawn takeover could knock nature's balance out of whack and turn a healthy, diverse marine habitat into one dominated by a single invasive species.

"It has the potential to be real ugly," said Leslie Hartman, Matagorda Bay ecoystem leader for the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. "But we just do not know."

The tiger prawns from the western Pacific - which can grow up to 13 inches long - have been spreading along the Gulf Coast since 2006, but their numbers took off this year. Shrimpers pulled one from Texas waters for the first time in June.

In all, shrimpers have found three tiger prawns in Aransas Bay, one in Sabine Lake near the Louisiana border and one in Gulf waters about 70 miles from Freeport, according to the Texas Sea Grant program at Texas A&M University.

Marine scientists will conduct genetic studies on the shrimp to determine their origin. Hartman said they will need at least 60 prawns for an accurate analysis.

Several theories

Some speculate that the Gulf invasion began with an accidental release of farmed prawns in South Carolina in 1988. Another theory: The prawns may have escaped from flooded industrial shrimp ponds in the Caribbean Sea during recent hurricanes.

The threat underscores concerns about large-scale fish farming, also known as aquaculture, in the Gulf. The federal government opened the waters to fish farms in 2009 despite fears from environmental and fishing interests over how to protect wild stocks.

Disease normally would exist in relatively low levels in fish around the Gulf but can run rampant in densely packed fish farms. Tiger prawns are a known carrier of at least 16 viruses, such as white spot, which can be lethal to shrimp.

The Gulf policy calls for only native species to be farmed, but it does not have the force of law, said George Leonard, who leads the Ocean Conservancy's aquaculture program.

"We need to be really, really cautious," Leonard said. "There has to be rules and regulations."

No farming of species

Texas allows industrial-scale shrimp ponds, but requires permits for the cultivation of non-native species. No one in the state is farming tiger prawns, said Tony Reisinger, a marine and coastal resources expert for the Texas Sea Grant program.

Marine scientists have yet to find any juvenile tiger prawns in Texas waters, a sign that the species is breeding. It is a difficult assignment because they look similar to native white shrimp at a young age.

Tiger prawns weigh more than a half-pound and have distinctive black and white stripes on the tail. They eat the same types of food as native shrimp species, but also prey on their smaller cousins, as well as crabs and young oysters.

"It's a large, competitive species," Reisinger said.

It's also tasty, fetching a higher market price than native brown shrimp on the New York market this month.

Some shrimpers have wondered if the large prawns could become the fourth harvestable shrimp species off the Texas coast.

Hartman, of Texas Parks and Wildlife, is skeptical.

"It could be another crop, but at the expense of our native crop," she said.

Italian enraged by laundromat fumes kills 3

An elderly man shot dead in a Christmas Eve massacre three members of a family who owned a laundromat in southern Italy, apparently because he was incensed by a years-long battle over the smoke and fumes emitted by the washing machines.

The ANSA news agency reports that the suspect used an automatic weapon to shoot the mother in front of the laundromat and two adult children as they tried to flee. He also seriously wounded the father, who was at home in the tiny town of Genzano Di Lucania, near Potenza and southeast of Naples, ANSA says.

The dead were identified in local media as Antoinette Di Palma, 55, and Maria Donata Menchise, 31, and Matthew Menchise, 27.

Their father, Leonardo Menchise, 60, was admitted to a hospital and reportedly had serious wounds.

The suspect, Ettore Bruscella, 77, was immediately taken into custody.

ANSA reports that Bruscella and the Menchise family had a long-running legal feud over the laundromat's chimney.

As new church building rises, Sacred Heart beats stronger

Donations still needed

While the new Sacred Heart Church is expected to open within a month, the church is still praying for help with two important parts of the Catholic Mass. Msgr. Arquimedes Vallejo said donations are still needed to install a new Stations of the Cross and a new ambo, the raised stand where scripture is traditionally read during Mass. Anyone who wishes to help can make donations at the church or send them to 771 Fulton St., Aurora IL 60505.

Updated: December 26, 2011 2:12AM

AURORA ? Every morning, the ladies wander in. Usually three or four show up in the morning, simply to see the work being done: a hole being dug, a window being installed, a pew being screwed down. Witnessing such normally mundane tasks takes on new meaning, when the work appears to be part of a miracle.

It has been 13 years since Aurora?s Sacred Heart Church burned to the ground, accidentally torched by a boy playing with matches.

As the poorest church in the Rockford Diocese, Sacred Heart was struggling and deep in debt before the fire. But while the church lacked financial resources, it has shown to be well-stocked in faith. Families who had been church members for more a century simply refused to give up. Even when the diocese discouraged rebuilding on the site near Fulton and State streets, by refusing to pay for reconstruction. Even when Mass was held in an awkward, smelly basement of the school with exposed pipes directly over the priest?s head. Even when weddings were moved elsewhere and caskets couldn?t get down the winding staircase.

?If you go to other churches, it?s just different,? longtime parishioner Jose Rodriguez said in April. ?I know it?s the same God, but there?s something special here. At other churches, you feel like something?s missing.?

It won?t be long before that something special will include a new church. Rodriguez was one of the dozens who came out in on a Friday morning in April for the groundbreaking that had seemed impossible.

That day, parishioners cried and snapped pictures. The hundreds of folding chairs set out were not nearly enough. Members of the poorest church in the diocese passed collection baskets and sang ?God Bless America.?

The week after that ceremony, construction began on the 8,500-square-foot church with buttressed steel interior and masonry exterior, able to seat 450. From the makeshift seats of the basement church, parishioners can see their new home going up.

?They are very, very, very happy to see the church,? said Msgr. Arquimedes Vallejo, pastor at Sacred Heart. ?The whole community is doing great sacrifices to make this.?

Vallejo said families have cut back on clothes and Christmas gifts so they can donate a little more to the church. When the donated sod and landscaping needed to be planted, 40 men showed up.

?This is one of the poorest churches in money. Regarding their talents, it is very rich,? Vallejo said. ?It is an example for us.?

The new church is a not a replica of the original. But it is built in a more traditional style to keep a connection with the old church. The design is clean and simple, with humble stained glass windows on the sides. The pews and lights have been donated from other churches and refurbished for Sacred Heart.

But, unlike the basement currently in use, the new building will have modern bathrooms, a crying room for people with young children and confessionals. Every day, loyal parishioners regularly peek into the new building to see the progress.

Vallejo expects to hold Mass in the new church in the next month. No doubt, even at twice the seating of the basement church, every seat will be filled with the smiling faces of people whose persistence has been rewarded.

?They are loyal, faithful people. That?s why the people rejoice to see their new church,? Vallejo said. ?For them, it looks like a dream and also a miracle.?
