Manziel: I'm the Bieber of college football

Updated?Jul 18, 2013 2:32 AM ET

?

HOOVER, Ala.

Johnny Manziel is so tweeted out, so watched, so TMZ?d that he said he feels like Justin Bieber. He said at Wednesday?s SEC media session he has spoken with a couple counselors to help deal with all the stress. He has talked, too, with Cam Newton about dealing with sudden attention. He has hung out with LeBron James to discuss it. He hasn?t talked much with Tim Tebow yet but does have a message to return.

Yes, his constant stream of little screw-ups has been about the modern social media world Manziel lives in, blown out of proportion to where a college kid can?t even have a beer without ...

Oh please. Johnny Football isn?t being burned by social media. He?s milking social media, using it to make every last one of his dreams come true. It?s getting him everything he wants, the usual Heisman experience on steroids.

(No, I did not just suggest that Manziel is on steroids.)

Manziel said Wednesday, several times, that the highlight of this year has been talking with LeBron. Just sitting there like two friends. They traded cell numbers. Texts, too.

I mean, this time last year, Manziel was just some nobody kid hoping to get a chance to play quarterback at Texas A&M. Now, he?s friends with Drake. You can?t blame him for eating this up, but let?s not start making excuses or using the entry to his dreamland as the excuse for his mistakes.

Manziel isn?t just some dumb kid. He?s Twitter savvy. He is also now the world?s biggest name-dropper.

He was the center of attention at SEC Media Days on Wednesday, and, sounding like a defendant well-prepared by his attorney, set down several talking points about his wild year.

1) He did not miss a meeting at the Manning passing camp because of any partying the night before, or any hangover. He just overslept, and his cellphone was dead.

2) He?s just a 20-year-old kid living and learning.

3) Stories all over Twitter and everywhere else about him are wrong.

The first story about why he missed the meeting at the Manning Camp, then was sent home, was that he had been out partying. Then, it was that he was ill. Then, I think his dad said he was dehydrated.

So why did he miss the meeting? Why did he oversleep?

?I wasn?t football-ready,? Manziel said. ?I was tired. It was exhausting. It had nothing to do with activities the night before. Just a really busy schedule in June and July. Probably bit off more than I can chew.?

He also said leaving the camp was a mutual decision and that he wasn?t kicked out.

But Alabama quarterback A.J. McCarron was Manziel?s roommate at the camp. When he got up in the morning and left for the meeting, why didn?t he wake up Manziel?

?I?m definitely not putting it on him,? Manziel said. ?Definitely my fault, 115 percent, 120 percent.?

What about the New York Daily News report that you weren?t even in the room?

?All you had to do was come knock on my door, open my dorm room,? he said. ?I?d have been right there asleep with my dead phone next to me.?

It occurs to me that McCarron, who will talk Thursday, has Manziel?s reputation in his hands.

I?m not being critical of Manziel?s offseason. He?s just having as much fun as he possibly can, as if he thinks this is all there is going to be for him. Last year?s Heisman winner is like the guy who hits the lottery and suddenly finds that he gets to hang out with rich people.

How do you expect the invisible kid sitting in the back corner to behave when he?s suddenly the most popular kid in school?

?I hope people still see that I?m a 20-year-old in college,? he said, roughly 50 times. ?I?m just trying to enjoy my life, and I hope that doesn?t upset too many people. I?m continuing to learn as the days and weeks go on. I?ve made mistakes and will learn from them and try not to make the same mistake twice.?

Texas A&M coach Kevin Sumlin said his role with Manziel is like a parent?s. You teach your kids to do the right things, and then hope they do: ?Off the field, there?s no question he?s made mistakes. ... We?ve had discussions on that. He has done some things he?s not very proud of.?

After hearing Manziel, I?m not sure I got that. In fact, I think Johnny Name-Dropper is proud of almost everything he has done, everyone he has met, just as any 20-year-old would be. That doesn?t include the way the Manning camp ended.

But Manziel compares himself to Bieber, and that's a good connection: Bieber is using social media to build himself, too.

Reporters are a few steps behind on Manziel?s story. It?s hard for a lot of media types to hold more than a story angle or two at a time in their heads. The new thing is this wild new, confusing world of social media? Sure, for a lot in the media.
But not for Johnny Manziel, 20-year-old college kid. He grew up in this world. He is comfortable with it.

?I knew the spotlight was bright,? he said. ?I knew all my actions were being watched, but lately it?s just been magnified.?

That?s where I?m calling BS. But Manziel?s time with the media was up Wednesday. And when it was over, he left to go back to College Station.

Oops, no he didn?t. He left for the ESPYs.

Senate nomination pact averts meltdown _ for now

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A bipartisan Senate pact has smoothed the confirmation path for a batch of President Barack Obama's nominations and removed, for now, a Democratic threat to impose procedural changes weakening minority Republicans' clout. Yet there are no guarantees that the conflict won't flare anew the next time a White House appointment stirs controversy.

A day after both parties celebrated an agreement averting a bitter fight over Senate rules, the chamber planned to vote Wednesday on one of Obama's picks, Fred Hochberg to be president of the Export-Import Bank.

Also possible this week are roll calls on Labor Secretary-designate Tom Perez and Gina McCarthy, Obama's choice to lead the Environmental Protection Agency.

On Tuesday, Republicans agreed to allow quick votes on seven Obama selections by simple majority margins, rather than forcing Democrats to garner 60 votes to succeed. Hours later, the Senate by 66-34 approved the first of those appointments, confirming Richard Cordray to head the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau ? after Republicans had blocked him for nearly two years as they demanded changes in the agency's structure and financing.

In a written statement, Obama thanked Senate leaders for working out their dispute but criticized his opponents for using "purely political reasons" to stall the nominations.

"In the weeks ahead, I hope the Congress will build on this spirit of cooperation to advance other urgent middle-class priorities" like revamping immigration laws and keeping student loan interest rates from rising, Obama said.

In exchange for the GOP concessions on the nominations, Democrats agreed to drop their effort to change the chamber's rules. Obama also submitted two new nominees for a pair of labor posts after Republicans adamantly opposed his initial picks.

"Does that mean it will last forever? I don't know about that," Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., said of the accord. But he added, "We have a new start for this body, and I feel very comfortable with it."

Democrats had been threatening to muscle through a rules change preventing opponents from forcing top agency nominees to win 60 votes from the 100-member Senate.

That would have diminished the chamber's filibuster rule that minority parties, Republicans as well as Democrats, have long cherished as a tool that prevents them from becoming virtually irrelevant. Changing the Senate's rules by majority vote ? instead of the two-thirds margin usually required when the plan is controversial ? is unusual and considered likely to invite such harsh retaliation that it is called the nuclear option.

"I think it's a step in the right direction that the majority has chosen not to exercise the nuclear option," Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky. "We feel good about that. I think they feel good about it. So I think that crisis has been averted."

The standoff was resolved following an exceptional closed-door meeting in the Capitol's old Senate chamber Monday night, attended by nearly every senator. For the previous several days, senators had met and made phone calls in an effort to head off a clash, with several lawmakers crediting Sens. John McCain, R-Ariz., and Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., for helping bring the sides together.

As part of the resulting agreement, Obama withdrew his nominations of two nominees to the National Labor Relations Board, Richard Griffin and Sharon Clark. Obama installed Griffin and Clark onto the board in 2011, bypassing the Senate but triggering a legal challenge in which an appeals court has said the two appointments were invalid. Republicans were insistent that those selections be replaced.

In their places, Obama nominated Nancy Schiffer, a former top lawyer for the AFL-CIO, and Kent Hirozawa, counsel to NLRB Chairman Mark Pearce. Reid said he was planning for the Senate to confirm both next week.

The seventh Obama appointment involved in the bipartisan deal is Pearce, whose pick is relatively uncontroversial. The NLRB appointments, if confirmed as expected, would prevent the virtual shutdown of the agency because of a lack of confirmed board members to rule on collective bargaining disputes between unions and companies.

Afterward, he combined the two photographs by overlaying the landscapes onto the suitcases. How Rising Mortgage Rates Might Cool a Hot ... - AOL Real Estate

Mortgage rates have been extremely low for some time now. However, with rates on the rise once again, some worry that the declining affordability could be harmful to the recovery of the market as a whole.

The number of homes currently on the market remains relatively constrained and that in turn is leading to higher prices every month, as it has for more than a year, according to a report from the Times of Trenton. However, with rising rates, consumers may be less interested in buying, which in turn could likely reduce values and cause growth in that area to decline.

It's important to note that the issue isn't necessarily that rates have gone up, but the rate at which they have done so. At the start of May, 30-year fixed-rate mortgages carried rates of 3.35 percent, which was near an all-time low, but by the time mid-June rolled around, these FRMs averaged 3.98 percent. Those for 15-year loans, which are preferred by consumers seeking to refinance their current home loans, rose as well, though slightly less appreciably, to 3.1 percent from 2.56 percent.

Those rates are still extremely affordable, especially when compared to those many current homeowners may now be paying on their mortgages, the report said. However, the added cost of these higher rates is nonetheless appreciable. For instance, on a $200,000 30-year fixed-rate mortgage, an increase of just 1 percentage point can add nearly $1,400 in annual costs through payments into principal balances and interest.

"Even if mortgage rates continue to increase from here, the median home will still be affordable to the median borrower, based on the conventional 25 percent debt-to-income threshold," said Hui Shan and Marty Young of Goldman Sachs, according to the newspaper. "As a result, rising interest rates will likely slow the strong house price appreciation observed over the past year, but the impact will likely be modest given the cushion provided by the high level of housing affordability at present."

Home value growth has been expected to level off at least somewhat for a while now, as the improvements seen in the previous 12 months or more were largely considered to be unsustainable, or worse, a sign of another growing bubble. As time goes on and rates grow at more reasonable levels, though, fears of another bubble will likely diminish appreciably.

Origins of human throwing unlocked

Early humans evolved to throw about two millions years ago, according to new research.

Anatomy changes found in the extinct species Homo erectus allowed this ability to evolve.

Archaeological evidence suggests hunting intensified during this time, which scientists now attribute to the ability to throw.

Researchers tell the journal Nature that the ability helped early hunters to evolve and migrate around the globe.

The ability to throw at very high speeds is unique to humans. We can throw much faster than our closest living relative - the chimpanzee - which can only reach speeds of 20mph compared to 90mph that many professional athletes can reach.

To investigate the evolutionary development of the ability to throw, scientists first had to understand the biomechanics of throwing today.

Fastest motion

They recorded the throwing movements of college baseball players using motion capture cameras and observed that the shoulder acts like a slingshot as the arm rotates backwards.

The ligaments and tendons surrounding the shoulder then stretch and store elastic energy, which powers the forward throw. When this energy is released it generates what scientists found was the fastest motion the human body produces.

There were shifts in our anatomy that enabled us to throw accurately, so we want to understand better just what those early hunting challenges were?

End Quote Prof Daniel Lieberman Harvard University

Neil Roach, from George Washington University, US, who led the study, said that changes in the anatomy of hominins (early humans) that occurred two millions years ago, enabled energy storage in the shoulder that allowed fast throwing, and therefore hunting, to occur.

"Success at hunting allowed our ancestors to become part-time carnivores, eating more calorie-rich meat and fat and dramatically improving the quality of their diet.

"This dietary change led to seismic shifts in our ancestors' biology, allowing them to grow larger bodies, larger brains, and to have more children, and it also did interesting things to our social structure.

"We start to see the origins of divisions of labour around that time, where some would be hunting, others would be gathering new foods.

"It probably also allowed us to move to new environments, such as areas that did not have vegetation to support us before we had the ability to hunt," Dr Roach told BBC News.

Homo erectus

  • Homo erectus ranged across Africa and Asia before giving way to modern humans
  • Many suspect it was on the direct evolutionary line to modern humans - Homo sapiens
  • It had a large face and teeth, strong, pronounced brow ridge and had a brain 2/3 human size

He added that it was important to remember "that what we think about hunting and behaviour is still a hypothesis" and further studies were needed.

'Fascinating problem'

Another member of the research team, Daniel Lieberman from Harvard University, US, said the most fascinating finding for him was that half the power that humans generate from throwing comes from elastic energy stored in the shoulder.

"That's not a by-product of evolution for something else, it's clearly an adaptation. There were shifts in our anatomy that enabled us to throw accurately, so we want to understand better just what those early hunting challenges were.

Speaking to BBC News from Kenya he explained how, compared to the wildlife he was surrounded by - cheetahs, lions and leopards - humans had no natural weapons such as claws.

"Human hunting is such an fascinating problem and the fact that these features all appear by the time Homo erectus evolved, suggests that hunting may have been a selective force for the ability for throwing."

Prof Lieberman added that the next step was to discover what exactly early humans were using to hunt, as no weapons have been found from this time in the archaeological record.

Susan Larson from Stony Brook University, New York, was not involved in the research. Her work also focuses on the shoulder anatomies of primates and humans in order to study their evolution. She said it could be easy to over interpret what was significant from a fossil.

"We're looking at the same fossils, it's a question about how you interpret the anatomy that you see in those fossils.

"Homo erectus was not necessarily such a proficient thrower. I think [Dr Roach and colleagues] are discounting the combination of features of how the shoulder as a whole has to work.

This research opens a window into our understanding of past behaviour, but our view is still cloudy?

End Quote Dr Jill Rhodes Drew University, US

"Their [Homo erectus] shoulder still functioned to give the hand a very wide range of motion in order to manipulate things and make tools, but it wasn't designed the same way as it is in humans.

"You cannot look at just one thing and say how a complicated piece of anatomy works, especially something like the shoulder. You have to understand how all parts work together to bring about a broad range of motion," Prof Larson told BBC News.

The new research introduces more of a strong theoretical model, than any definitive evidence of throwing behaviour in Homo erectus, said Jill Rhodes from Drew University, US.

"The humeral torsion - the angle at which the head of the humerus (top of the arm) is articulating at the shoulder joint - does not fall within the range of modern throwing athletes and more relevantly, as throwing is a one-handed behaviour, there is no evidence for asymmetry in the humeral torsion angle in Homo erectus.

"There simply is not the fossil preservation and without it, we cannot say that the humeral torsion demonstrated in that species is not an aspect of phylogeny rather than behaviour.

"This research opens a window into our understanding of past behaviour, but our view is still cloudy."

Microsoft (Finally) Confirms WebGL Support For Internet Explorer 11

ie-logoOur own Frederic Lardinois noted that the new version of Internet Explorer wasn't a major revamp, but it does play home to some very compelling changes under the hood. Take WebGL for instance -- nearly all of Microsoft's major browser rivals have already jumped on that bandwagon, and now Antoine Leblond confirmed at Microsoft's annual BUILD conference in San Francisco that Internet Explorer 11 (which should officially debut alongside Windows 8.1 later this year) will indeed support WebGL too.

New technology reduces, controls CT radiation exposure in children: CT scan radiation reduced by 37 percent

June 19, 2013 ? Patients at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center are being exposed to significantly less radiation during CT scans because of new technology that allows doctors to more tightly control radiation doses. The first-of-its-kind imaging software reduced overall radiation exposure from CT scans by 37 percent, according to two new studies published online today in the journal Radiology.

The imaging software -- developed and currently in use only at Cincinnati Children's -- mathematically determines the lowest possible radiation dose for the patient before a scan is performed, according to the study led by David Larson, MD, radiology quality and safety director at the medical center and principal architect of the technology.

Used with existing CT scanners, the new software allows radiologists to precisely control the amount of radiation based on the specific size of each patient, while still producing diagnostic-quality images. The software provides radiologists with the correct scanner settings before the CT scan is performed, and then monitors each scan slice-by-slice, to confirm that the right dose was used.

"Radiologists have had to rely on a trial-and-error approach to optimizing CT radiation dose. This model allows us to more accurately walk that fine line of precise dosing," said Dr. Larson. "Even though modern CT scanners adjust the dose based on the size of the patient, they do not necessarily adjust it to the exact image quality radiologists need. This way we can not only specify what image quality and dose are appropriate, but we can also predict the scanner settings needed to achieve those levels."

During the quality-improvement study involving more than 800 patients, Dr. Larson and his team asked radiologists to score CT images to determine an acceptable amount of "noise" -- or unwanted random signals.

"Image quality is what determines the appropriate radiation dose -- the challenge is to find the threshold where the dose is as low as possible, but the images are still clear," Larson added. "The right balance results in images that may be a little noisy but are good enough to provide an accurate diagnosis."

Larson believes the new system can have broad-scale impact on how CT scans are performed. He adds that though the approach was developed in pediatrics, it is also applicable for adults.

"Image quality depends on patient size, not patient age," Larson said. "58 percent of the examinations in our study were of adult-sized patients."

The use of CT scan imaging tests is of growing concern because the tests entail higher doses of radiation -- typically producing 500 times more radiation than x-rays.

Times-Union: JaxPort's pick for CEO says Horizon Lines agreement won't be conflict of interest

The shipping executive selected to be the Jacksonville Port Authority?s next CEO said Tuesday he does not think his separation agreement with Horizon Lines would create any conflicts of interest for him as JaxPort?s top administrator.

Brian Taylor resigned from Horizon Lines last November and is receiving $370,000 a year over a two-year period from the company, which uses the JaxPort-owned Blount Island terminal for shipping cargo to Puerto Rico.

JaxPort has asked General Counsel Cindy Laquidara to determine whether Taylor would face any conflict of interest in serving as CEO since Horizon Lines competes with other JaxPort tenants for cargo business.

Taylor declined to comment further on the issue. The terms of his contract, including his salary, still must be negotiated and voted on by the board.

?I am excited to get started and get to work,? he said of the board?s decision Monday to offer him the CEO post. ?I see the port of Jacksonville as a real economic driver for the region and a huge opportunity for me and the team to build something that is really great.?

He said he does not own any stock in Horizon Lines, having sold his shares after he left the company.

Taylor, 54, rose to the rank of chief operating officer and chief commercial officer at Horizon Lines, which is headquartered in Charlotte, N.C. and provides shipping services to Puerto Rico, Alaska and Hawaii.

He declined to comment on why he resigned from Horizon Lines.

?There are many reasons that executives choose to leave companies,? he said. ?I feel that I left on good terms.?

Heidrick & Struggles, the search firm hired by JaxPort in a $99,000 contract, did not give board members the separation agreement Taylor reached with Horizon Lines. JaxPort board member John Anderson has said the board should have gotten that document before it voted to pick Taylor.

Wood borer makes its own enzyme, which could thrive in industrial setting

Researchers from the United Kingdom, the Energy Department's National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), and the University of Kentucky have recently published a paper describing a novel cellulose-degrading enzyme from a marine wood borer Limnoria quadripunctata, commonly known as the gribble.

Gribbles are biologically intriguing because they exhibit a relatively unique ability to produce their own enzymes instead of using symbiotic microbes to break down the biomass they eat. New biomass-degrading enzymes from novel sources such as the gribble may prove beneficial to the biofuels industry.

Gribbles are 1-3 millimeters in length, but collectively they bore through wood quickly, and are responsible for significant natural and man-made marine timber damage around the world. Scientists at Universities of Portsmouth and York in the United Kingdom and the University of Kentucky in the United States, with researchers from NREL, are hoping to turn that special talent into a source of novel enzymes for the biofuels industry.

A paper describing the crystal structure of a key enzyme produced by the gribble appears online in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America. http://www.pnas.org/content/early/2013/05/31/1301502110.short

Gribbles live in inter-tidal zones and, similar to termites, they burrow into wood. Gribbles, unlike termites or many other animals including people, do not rely on gut bacteria to make enzymes to aid their digestion. Gribbles instead exhibit a sterile gut, and secrete their own enzymes into their guts made in a special organ termed the heptopancreas that runs the entire length of their body.

Interestingly, several of the enzymes produced by gribbles are in the same important enzyme classes that are typically harvested from fungi in the biosphere for industrially deconstructing the cellulose in biomass. The gribble enzymes hold promise of tolerating salts much better, likely due to the fact they evolved in a marine environment. This unique adaptation may have beneficial implications for the ability of the gribble enzymes to more efficiently operate in a high-solids, industrial environment, breaking biomass down more effectively into sugars, which can then be converted into ethanol or a hydrocarbon fuel to replace gasoline, diesel, or jet fuel.

The biofuels industry needs tough, efficient enzymes that are tolerant of industrial processes. "For biochemical conversion with enzymes, industry needs to push up to very high solids, with very little water around," NREL Senior Scientist Gregg Beckham, one of the co-authors, said. "The structure of the gribble enzyme reveals new evolutionary adaptations that may suggest mechanisms for producing more robust, industrial enzymes for high-solids loadings environments."

NREL ran computer simulations and aided in the structural and biochemical analysis of the enzyme.

The work leading to the paper provided deeper understanding of how the organism adapts and survives. NREL and UK scientists are now examining how features of the gribble enzymes could be incorporated into industrially relevant enzymes and settings.

Erdogan quiets Istanbul with softer tone, but calm is likely to be brief

Prime Minister Erdogan temporarily placated Turkish protesters by pausing development of Gezi Park, but their grievances run deeper. It will take more to stop demonstrations for good.

Today, only a day after issuing his ?final? warning to Taksim Square?s protesters, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan softened his tone, telling them that he has received their message and will at least temporarily halt plans for redeveloping Gezi Park.

After a night of meetings with protest representatives, Mr. Erdogan announced in a speech that the future of Gezi Park, the issue that sparked two-week long anti-government demonstrations, will be decided by the courts, reports?the Guardian.

Although tensions across the country have eased since reaching a fever pitch earlier this week,?many believe that Erdogan?s bid to defuse the unrest won?t be enough to end the demonstrations. For many, the protests are about something much bigger than the issue of Gezi Park: the direction Turkey will take in the future.

Protests began two weeks ago, when a group of peaceful protesters staged a demonstration to attempt to stop the destruction of Gezi Park, one of Istanbul?s last green spaces, to make way for a mall and housing complex. After police violently broke up the sit-in, thousands more took to the streets to protest what they see has the increasingly authoritarian style of Erdogan?s rule and the gradual erosion of secular values by his Islam-rooted Justice and Development Party (AKP), says?the Los Angeles Times.

Protesters accuse Erdogan, who won 50 percent of the vote in his last election, of behaving like an autocrat and only representing those who voted for him. Much of the country feels increasingly alienated by controversial policies, such as limiting the sale of alcohol and birth control.

Though at first defiant, even going so far as to label the protesters as "terrorists," Erdogan came under increasing pressure after several brutal police crackdowns which resulted in injuries to some 5,000 people. Yesterday the European Parliament voted to condemn Turkey for its use of violence against the demonstrators. And according to?Today?s Zaman, Germany is seeking to suspend Turkey?s EU accession talks.?

Should the court rule in favor of the government, a referendum will be held over the fate of Gezi Park. But many protesters told The Christian Science Monitor this is not enough.

Demonstrators and others at odds with the government say they are skeptical of its commitment to conducting a free and fair referendum about the park. Many point out that Erdogan could have held such a vote?long before the situation escalated to clashes?between protesters and police.

?We don?t trust the results of these elections. Maybe they?ll change the results,? says Yasin Arslan, an aeronautical engineer now in Gezi Park.?

What?s more, it is not clear that Erdogan's concessions will end the demonstrations. According to Al-Monitor, the Taksim Platform ? a coalition of 80 NGOs leading the protests ? have stated that they will neither honor a referendum nor vacate the park.

This weekend, as protestors remain at their camps, the AKP will be holding mass rallies in Istanbul and Ankara, reports?Today?s Zaman. Widely believed to be displays of force to counter the anti-government protests, AKP officials claim that the rallies are simply a part of their campaign for 2014 municipal elections.

But as Bloomberg points out, opposition parties have called for their cancellation, fearing that the rallies will only stoke tensions.

Phish frontman says Tony nom impressed daughters

NEW YORK (AP) ? While Phish frontman Trey Anastasio has a highly devout fan base, it takes a little more to impress his teenage daughters. But that changed when he was nominated this season for a Tony Award.

"They were completely unimpressed with the rock thing. Not impressed at all. This was huge for them," the 48-year-old Phish frontman said Sunday on the red carpet at Radio City Music Hall before going into the Tonys.

Anastasio, and wife, Susan, say their daughters Eliza and Isabella are huge musical theater fans.

He composed the music to the defunct Broadway musical, "Hands on a Hardbody." Though the show closed before the Tony nominations, it was honored with three nods, including one for Anastasio's original score.

The musician has only positive feelings for the show.

"I'm just overwhelmed by all of it," Anastasio said. "We're hearing that the show might run regionally in certain places, so we're thrilled about that."

He laughed when told some Phish fans were happy that the show closed so he would stick to playing live.

"So they were glad the show closed?" he asked. "I am excited to get on tour, if I'm speaking to the Phish fans. I can't wait."

Anastasio says the band will play some of the songs from the musical at Phish shows.

"There's a lot of great songs. I'm not sure what will make that leap at this time," Anastasio said.

When asked if his daughters say their dad is Trey Anastasio when getting autographs, he joked: "Broadway composer. Trey Anastasio, Broadway composer."

John Malkovich saves bleeding man in Toronto

John Malkovich had a definite case of right place, right time last Thursday in Toronto, when he rushed to the aid of a bleeding tourist, according to multiple reports.

Ohio residents Jim Walpole, 79, and his wife Marilyn were visiting Canada when Jim stubbed his toe and fell into the street after leaving a restaurant. Something sharp sticking out of nearby scaffolding slashed his throat, and he began bleeding.

"The way he was spurting I thought it was the carotid (artery) or the jugular (vein)," his wife, who was trained as a nurse, told CBC News.

Fortunately, Malkovich -- in town to appear in the theatrical production of "The Giacomo Variations" -- was standing outside smoking a cigarette, and rushed over. He used his scarf to help stop the blood flow. (Malkovich wasn't alone; Chris Mathias, a doorman from the hotel and Ben Quinn, the owner of the restaurant where the Walpoles had just eaten, also stopped to help.)

"I was bleeding so bad on my neck, and Chris brought him a towel and John kept pressure on my bleeding neck and then Quinn kept me from turning over and made me stay there until EMS arrived," Walpole told the Toronto Star.

He didn't recognize the two-time Oscar nominee, however. "I asked, 'What's your name?' He said, 'John.' And I didn't ask the last name 'cause I didn't figure I'd remember it anyhow."

An ambulance took Walpole to St. Michael's Hospital nearby, where he was released after receiving 10 stitches.

While neither of the Walpoles think they've seen any of Malkovich's films, Marilyn plans to remedy that now -- perhaps during her husband's recovery period. "I'm going to watch all of them that I can," she said.

PS4 video shows off UI for sharing gameplay videos, multitasking, making friends

By now, most people ought to have dismissed the old stereotype that the male is the calm, rational opposite of the hysterical female. If anything, it's the other way round, which is why the short promo video shown right at the end of Sony's E3 press conference was kind of refreshing. It was also pretty useful, because even if the software it shows isn't final, it reveals how the PS4 user interface is likely to handle things like chat, gameplay video sharing and multi-tasking. Read on for a cut-down version of the fast-paced clip and our probing evaluation of what it says about PS4 gaming and human behavior.

The Robo Raven Is So Lifelike, It Fools Birdbrains

The Robo Raven Is So Lifelike, It Fools Birdbrains

We've been trying to create robots that mimic natural bird-flight for years, but they've only ever achieved a crude imitation. This is largely because, unlike the robots, real birds can move their wings independently. But now, a research team from the Maryland Robotics Center has created the Robo Crow, a mechanical flyer so biologically accurate that hawks keep hunting (and dive bombing) the prototypes.

Developed with funding from the U.S. Army Research Laboratory, the Robo Raven measures just under two feet long. Its hollow skeleton (just like a real bird's) is made of 3D-printed thermal-resistant plastic, foam and carbon with Mylar foil stretched over to constitute wings and a tail. Dr. SK Gupta, a professor in mechanical engineering at UMD, has been working on the design since 2007, however development has been slow due to the one-off prototypes continually crashing, breaking, and being attacked by raptors.

The Robo Raven Is So Lifelike, It Fools Birdbrains

"Robo Raven attracts attention from birds in the area," John Gerdes, an engineer at the Army?s Aberdeen Proving Ground, told Military.com. "[Hawks] will dive and attack by hitting the bird from above with their talons; then, they typically fly away," whereas seagulls and other prey birds will line up in formation behind it.

These attacks are prompted by the Robo Raptor's uncannily lifelike flapping. Until now, all flapping flyers from experimental military ISR drones to the $30 toys at Walmart have flapped their wings in unison?both go up, both go down, that's it. This severely limits the robot's mobility so instead, the Maryland researchers figured out how to power and control them independently. This enables the Robo Raven to perform previously-impossible acrobatic aerial maneuvers like rolls and dives.

"Our new robot, Robo Raven, is based on a fundamentally new design concept," Gupta said in a news release. "It uses two programmable motors that can be synchronized electronically to coordinate motion between the wings." A handheld R/C controller provides the basic trajectory input. Eat your heart out Bubo.
