PFT: Rodgers explains his defense of Braun

Philadelphia Eagles v Cleveland BrownsGetty Images

The dust has settled (sort of) on the reduction from 90 to 53 players.? And now that the Browns? roster is determined (sort of), more than a fourth of the players are rookies.

In all, 15 of 53 players are entering their first season in the NFL.

While looking for the best 53, G.M. Tom Heckert apparently wasn?t paying attention to the abundance of players without an abundance of experience.? ?I?m going to be totally honest with you, [team spokesman Neal Gulkis] just told me that,? Heckert told the media on Saturday.? ?I didn?t really know it was 15 so it?s obviously not something that we planned.?

The current 15 rookies are, in alphabetical order:? defensive back Johnson Bademosi, receiver Travis Benjamin, linebacker Tank Carder, linebacker L.J. Fort, defensive back Tashaun Gipson, receiver Josh Gordon, defensive tackle John Hughes, linebackers James-Michael Johnson, defensive lineman Ishaa?ily Kitchen, offensive lineman Ryan Miller, running back Trent Richardson, offensive lineman Mitchell Schwartz, defensive back Trevin Wade, quarterback Brandon Weeden, and defensive lineman Billy Winn.

Nine are draft picks; the other six (I are good with the number things) were undrafted.

The Browns also didn?t care about fitting anyone?s formula for how many players a team should have at each position.

?I don?t know if Pat [Shurmur] told you guys, but you can see there are some unorthodox ? maybe too many guys at one position,? Heckert said.? ?We talked about it in our meeting the other day and we wanted to keep the best 53 or what we consider the best 53 no matter what position, if we have to go light at one position or heavy at another one, we were willing to do it so I think it worked out that way at least right now and we?ll see how it goes.?

Given the way the Browns have performed the past few years, it should be no surprise that 15 first-year players could claim jobs.? In order to keep the guys who picked those players around for another year beyond 2012, however, those rookies need to step up.? Quickly.

Self Hypnosis: Your Key to Self Empowerment - Healthy Beginnings ...

Written By June Milligan, M.Ed., CCHt |

If you can carve 20 minutes a day out of your busy schedule to do self hypnosis, you?ll be able to significantly increase your feeling of well being, your self esteem and your sense of empowerment.

A suggestion is an idea designed to create a response in thought or behavior. We get many external suggestions: from other people, from the culture, from advertising. Self suggestions, on the other hand, are ideas we propose to ourselves, ideas that come from our own minds.

Suggestions are like food?food for the mind. The suggestions we take in on a daily basis, whether from an external source or from ourselves, make up our mental diet. These suggestions can have a serious impact on our emotions, mind and body. For instance, being told by your mate every day that you?re a wonderful person will probably have a very positive cumulative effect on your self esteem. However, watching the negativity of TV news programs day after day can profoundly change how you approach life. So, ideas that we expose ourselves to on a daily basis shape who and what we are and what we believe about ourselves and about what we can accomplish.

Every thought we think affects our physical body as well. Our minds are not separate islands with a remote relationship to our bodies. They are intricately linked. When we think a happy thought, our subconscious mind instructs our body to produce endorphins, the pain-killing hormones and serotonin, the feel-good hormone. The same is true of negatives: our bodies produce cortisol, the stress hormone, which damages our cells and compromises our immune system.

In fact, when we experience anything, our subconscious mind stores all our emotional and physical reactions in its memory for future reference. Our bodies also store those experiences. Just like we don?t want to eat junk food very often, we shouldn?t engage in ?junk thoughts? because they?ll have the same negative effect. It?s crucial to find ways to supplement our mental nutrition; we must find ways to supply ourselves with healthful, uplifting suggestions in order to counteract the negative ones that bombard us every day.

Self hypnosis is an easy way to do just that. Hypnosis of any kind entails communication with the subconscious mind. Some people refer to it as the unconscious. That mind is below the level of your conscious awareness. In other words, we?re not aware of its thoughts or actions. It?s the subconscious mind that?s responsible for running thousands of autonomic functions of the body such as breathing, metabolism, digestion, blood pressure, etc. That?s where all our memories and habit patterns reside. And the subconscious is always open to suggestions emanating from the conscious mind.

We often have expected affirmations to change our behavior, but sometimes they don?t ?stick.? That?s because the subconscious won?t accept them unless they?re repeated often, and accompanied by a consistent and motivating emotion. Also, many of our notions to change our behavior or habits never ?take? because they are contradicted by other ideas already in our subconscious. Therefore, a structured method for delivering consistent messages to the subconscious is needed. The goal here is to create a strong impression, because if the subconscious remains unimpressed by our messages, then our current situation, which is caused by our patterns of thought and behavior, are likely to stay the same.

After you decide upon the words and phrases with which to reprogram your subconscious mind, you should find a quiet place, turn off the phones, tell your family to leave you alone for a set period of time, and use whatever method you prefer to get into a quiet state of relaxation. You may use progressive relaxation, deep breathing, calming music, a certain favorite visualization or all of the above.? Then repeat your affirmations to yourself if you have memorized them or read them to yourself. Some people find it helpful to record them and just listen. That seems to be the easiest way.

We need to find a way to be more self empowered in every way: learn how to heal ourselves, be self motivated, understand that we?re responsible to ourselves, for who we are and what we create. When we give that job away to someone else, we?re disempowering ourselves. When we know what we want, and take action to make it happen, we are so much happier, have greater self esteem and are able to actually create the situations and conditions we want. If we can reprogram our subconscious mind to assist us in getting there, what could be better?

The books listed at the bottom of this article can help you with words and phrases for your affirmations, or any certified clinical hypnotherapist can assist with personalized phrases and teach you exactly how to do this. Reprogram your subconscious mind, empower yourself, and move on toward the life you want to live!

New York City health commissioner: scold or lifesaver?

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Critics call him a puritanical scold, Gotham's Dr. No and a nursemaid to Mayor Michael Bloomberg's nanny state. Meet Thomas Farley, New York City's health commissioner.

Farley, a pediatrician and endurance athlete, says they are wrong about his efforts to help New Yorkers eat better, smoke less and exercise more -- moves that have been linked to New York's recent gains in average life expectancy, the biggest gains of any metro area in the country.

"Anybody who is first at doing something is going to get a lot of criticism. And this is New York, this is the way we deal with each other," said Farley, who hopes to roll out two of his most controversial health initiatives this month.

One is a plan to restrict the size of sugary drinks to 16 ounces or less nearly everywhere they are sold, which is expected to be approved soon by the city health board. The other is a push to have hospitals promote breastfeeding by making baby formula less available to new mothers.

Behind the desk in Farley's office in Queens are reminders of the marketing muscle he's up against: eye-catching tobacco products, colorful 23-ounce sugary drinks and a cache of baby formula sent unsolicited to an expectant mother on his staff.

The unquestionably fit Farley shared his height - 6 foot 2 inches - but declined to reveal his weight or age, although he appears to be in his mid-50s. Each day he leaves the Manhattan apartment he shares with his wife, also a pediatrician, and their four daughters for a 4-mile run, a 10-mile bike ride or weight lifting and a swim.

His chief vice is pastries, and he immediately regretted telling a reporter that as a boy in New Jersey he ducked into the woods to smoke cigarettes with friends until he was caught.

Farley graduated with honors from Haverford College. After receiving his medical degree from Tulane University, he spent 11 years with the Louisiana Office of Public Health.

He took the helm in New York in 2009 after Thomas Frieden left to run the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. As the head of an agency with 6,000 employees and a $1.6 billion budget, Farley today shoulders what he calls Bloomberg's legacy as "the world's first public health mayor."

Along with his predecessor, Farley is credited with pioneering bans on smoking and trans fats, mandates to reduce salt and post calorie counts, and initiatives that pushed junk food to the back of corner grocery stores.

At the same time, the city has reclaimed streets and created construction incentives to transform bike riding, walking and stair climbing into almost unavoidable exercise.

CRITICS ABOUND

Those efforts are being replicated in cities across the globe -- calories are now printed on menus in Seattle, and in Hanoi smoking is no longer allowed in public places -- even as they come under fire from restaurant groups, food and beverage companies, and small business owners.

Farley brushed off criticism that he's trampling personal freedoms as a gripe from industries motivated by unfounded fears of lost profits.

"We're creating a healthier environment that gives people the freedom to just go about their business without having to worry so much about being vigilant about their health behavior," Farley said.

"He really said that?" asked Andrew Moesel, spokesman for the New York City chapter of the New York State Restaurant Association, which opposes the proposed soda ban. "There have been many times when this administration thinks they know what's best for citizens and that just rubs people the wrong way."

While Farley's approach may bristle, results are cropping up that may shift the conversation.

A study discussed in the June 2012 medical journal Lancet shows New York City far outpaced the rest of the nation in gains in life expectancy. Some success is due to the city preventing and controlling AIDS, but more than 60 percent of the increase in life expectancy since 2000 can be attributed to reductions in heart disease, cancer, diabetes and stroke, the report said.

"A major role was played by the health department, especially the programs and policies to promote healthy living," lead researcher Ali Mokdad, a professor at the University of Washington's Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, told Reuters.

Farley's crusade for a healthier New York has faced setbacks. A tempest swirled in January when an obese actor complained that his photo had been altered to depict him as an amputee in a city advertisement on the dangers of diabetes.

And in July the courts ruled the city could not scare smokers by requiring delis to hang posters of a stroke-damaged brain, a cancerous lung and a rotting tooth.

Farley credited Bloomberg for the health department's success. It also helps to have a city board of health to pass rules that might otherwise get bogged down in a broader state legislature, he said.

"It's very rare for public health agencies around the country to have all those things working in their favor, so we feel obligated, in a way, to make headway here," he said. "Then the rest of the country often follows us."

Naval Research Laboratory

The Naval Research Laboratory supported the 8th Annual CanSat competition where 26 college rocket teams came together from all over the world to compete. This year's "mission" was to launch an autonomous CanSat (a satellite in a can) with a deployable lander containing one large raw hen egg that cannot be damaged on landing. The "CanSat " refers to the complete system-the carrier and the lander. The event was held on June 8-10, 2012, in Abilene and Burkett, Texas.

The CanSat is deployed from a rocket at an altitude of about 610 meters (2001 feet). Once released from the rocket, the CanSat descends between 10 and 20 meters per second using any type of descent control system or device. At an altitude of 200 meters, the CanSat reduces the descent rate to within 4 and 6 meters per second. At 91 meters altitude, the CanSat carrier releases the lander that contains one large raw hen's egg. The lander hopefully lands without damaging the egg. The lander cannot free fall. It must contain a descent control system or device to reduce the descent rate to less than 5 meters per second. The carrier telemetry data may be stored on-board for post processing in the event of a communications failure. Teams must build their own ground station. Telemetry from the carrier is displayed, in real-time, on a team-developed ground station.

Teams are given points, and scoring is started early in January for the preliminary design reviews. Scoring continues for critical design reviews, pre-flight inspections, weight, launching, and finally the post-flight reviews. This year's winners were 1st Place: Istanbul Technical University, Team UYARI; 2nd Place: SRM University, India, Team WelkinSat; 3rd Place: India Institute of Technology, Team Garuda; 4th Place: Istanbul Technical University, Team Lagari; and 5th Place: University of Michigan, Team OverEasy. Winners were given a plaque as well as a cash award for their team. This year, the competition was very close, with only 4 points separating the 1st Place team from the 5th Place team. All participants were given certificates of participation.

The competition is open to teams from universities and colleges. Teams must be able to design and build a space-type system, following the approved competition guide, and then compete against each other at the end of two semesters to determine the winners. Rockets are provided, but the teams are responsible for funding the construction of their CanSat and for all travel/lodging expenses.

The American Astronautical Society (AAS) and American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) along with assistance from other sponsors have organized this student design-build-launch competition for space-related topics. Although similar competitions exist for other fields of engineering (robots, radio-control airplanes, racing cars, etc.), most space-related competitions are paper design competitions. While these are worthwhile, the CanSat competition gives students the satisfaction of being involved with the end-to-end life cycle of a complex engineering project, from conceptual design, through integration and test, actual operation of the system, and concluding with a post-mission summary and debrief. The sponsors include NRL, coordinated by Ivan Galysh, NRL's Naval Center for Space Technology; NASA; AIAA; Ball Aerospace & Technologies Corporation; the American Astronomical Society; Goddard Space Flight Center; Jet Propulsion Laboratory; Praxis Inc.; and the Integral Systems, a Kratos Company.

NRL's Exhibits Program was present at this year's competition displaying the Lab's 54-year-old model of the Vanguard satellite that was successfully launched into Earth orbit on March 17, 1958. It is always a big hit with the students. NRL's exhibitor, Gayle Fullerton, Code 3430, also photographed the event.
