Phish frontman says Tony nom impressed daughters

NEW YORK (AP) ? While Phish frontman Trey Anastasio has a highly devout fan base, it takes a little more to impress his teenage daughters. But that changed when he was nominated this season for a Tony Award.

"They were completely unimpressed with the rock thing. Not impressed at all. This was huge for them," the 48-year-old Phish frontman said Sunday on the red carpet at Radio City Music Hall before going into the Tonys.

Anastasio, and wife, Susan, say their daughters Eliza and Isabella are huge musical theater fans.

He composed the music to the defunct Broadway musical, "Hands on a Hardbody." Though the show closed before the Tony nominations, it was honored with three nods, including one for Anastasio's original score.

The musician has only positive feelings for the show.

"I'm just overwhelmed by all of it," Anastasio said. "We're hearing that the show might run regionally in certain places, so we're thrilled about that."

He laughed when told some Phish fans were happy that the show closed so he would stick to playing live.

"So they were glad the show closed?" he asked. "I am excited to get on tour, if I'm speaking to the Phish fans. I can't wait."

Anastasio says the band will play some of the songs from the musical at Phish shows.

"There's a lot of great songs. I'm not sure what will make that leap at this time," Anastasio said.

When asked if his daughters say their dad is Trey Anastasio when getting autographs, he joked: "Broadway composer. Trey Anastasio, Broadway composer."

John Malkovich saves bleeding man in Toronto

John Malkovich had a definite case of right place, right time last Thursday in Toronto, when he rushed to the aid of a bleeding tourist, according to multiple reports.

Ohio residents Jim Walpole, 79, and his wife Marilyn were visiting Canada when Jim stubbed his toe and fell into the street after leaving a restaurant. Something sharp sticking out of nearby scaffolding slashed his throat, and he began bleeding.

"The way he was spurting I thought it was the carotid (artery) or the jugular (vein)," his wife, who was trained as a nurse, told CBC News.

Fortunately, Malkovich -- in town to appear in the theatrical production of "The Giacomo Variations" -- was standing outside smoking a cigarette, and rushed over. He used his scarf to help stop the blood flow. (Malkovich wasn't alone; Chris Mathias, a doorman from the hotel and Ben Quinn, the owner of the restaurant where the Walpoles had just eaten, also stopped to help.)

"I was bleeding so bad on my neck, and Chris brought him a towel and John kept pressure on my bleeding neck and then Quinn kept me from turning over and made me stay there until EMS arrived," Walpole told the Toronto Star.

He didn't recognize the two-time Oscar nominee, however. "I asked, 'What's your name?' He said, 'John.' And I didn't ask the last name 'cause I didn't figure I'd remember it anyhow."

An ambulance took Walpole to St. Michael's Hospital nearby, where he was released after receiving 10 stitches.

While neither of the Walpoles think they've seen any of Malkovich's films, Marilyn plans to remedy that now -- perhaps during her husband's recovery period. "I'm going to watch all of them that I can," she said.

PS4 video shows off UI for sharing gameplay videos, multitasking, making friends

By now, most people ought to have dismissed the old stereotype that the male is the calm, rational opposite of the hysterical female. If anything, it's the other way round, which is why the short promo video shown right at the end of Sony's E3 press conference was kind of refreshing. It was also pretty useful, because even if the software it shows isn't final, it reveals how the PS4 user interface is likely to handle things like chat, gameplay video sharing and multi-tasking. Read on for a cut-down version of the fast-paced clip and our probing evaluation of what it says about PS4 gaming and human behavior.

The Robo Raven Is So Lifelike, It Fools Birdbrains

The Robo Raven Is So Lifelike, It Fools Birdbrains

We've been trying to create robots that mimic natural bird-flight for years, but they've only ever achieved a crude imitation. This is largely because, unlike the robots, real birds can move their wings independently. But now, a research team from the Maryland Robotics Center has created the Robo Crow, a mechanical flyer so biologically accurate that hawks keep hunting (and dive bombing) the prototypes.

Developed with funding from the U.S. Army Research Laboratory, the Robo Raven measures just under two feet long. Its hollow skeleton (just like a real bird's) is made of 3D-printed thermal-resistant plastic, foam and carbon with Mylar foil stretched over to constitute wings and a tail. Dr. SK Gupta, a professor in mechanical engineering at UMD, has been working on the design since 2007, however development has been slow due to the one-off prototypes continually crashing, breaking, and being attacked by raptors.

The Robo Raven Is So Lifelike, It Fools Birdbrains

"Robo Raven attracts attention from birds in the area," John Gerdes, an engineer at the Army?s Aberdeen Proving Ground, told Military.com. "[Hawks] will dive and attack by hitting the bird from above with their talons; then, they typically fly away," whereas seagulls and other prey birds will line up in formation behind it.

These attacks are prompted by the Robo Raptor's uncannily lifelike flapping. Until now, all flapping flyers from experimental military ISR drones to the $30 toys at Walmart have flapped their wings in unison?both go up, both go down, that's it. This severely limits the robot's mobility so instead, the Maryland researchers figured out how to power and control them independently. This enables the Robo Raven to perform previously-impossible acrobatic aerial maneuvers like rolls and dives.

"Our new robot, Robo Raven, is based on a fundamentally new design concept," Gupta said in a news release. "It uses two programmable motors that can be synchronized electronically to coordinate motion between the wings." A handheld R/C controller provides the basic trajectory input. Eat your heart out Bubo.

Explosions heard from NATO site at Afghan airport

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? Large explosions are being heard coming from the military side of Kabul international airport, which houses a NATO headquarters.

The explosions began about 4:30 a.m. Monday from the direction of the military headquarters.

The U.S.-led NATO coalition's Joint Command headquarters at the airport runs the day-to-day operations of the nearly 12-year-old war against an insurgency in Afghanistan. The airport's military side is also used for NATO transport and other aircraft.

The cause of the explosions was not immediately clear, but insurgents usually carry out attacks in the early morning.
